Opera: a form of theatre in which characters communicate through song instead of speech: a multimedia art form: music, poetry, painting, costume design, dance, in italian, opera means work o. Humanism: a philosophy that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings over the divine or supernatural. Interest in music"s powers to express emotions: baroque opera arias are classified by affect (emotion), eg. lament, rage. Florentine camerata: group (called an academy) of aristocrats who got together to talk about plato and aristotle. Music should represent emotions by imitating how someone feeling that emotion would express themselves. Frist operas: opera for the elite: performed at court or private parties for aristocrats (not open to public) First french operas: performed at louis xiv"s court. Later on: opera for the public: first public opera house: venice, 1637. Monteverdi"s last opera, the coronation of poppea.
