Late 18th to early 19th, classical and romantic era. Symphony, string quartet, piano concerto, piano sonata (primarily instrumental music was his focus, what he is more known for) Known for symphony, only composed one opera. 1st period (1770-1802) counted as classical, a generation after mozart from a musical family, drunken father thought he taught beethoven musical aspects not a child prodigy. Went to vienna to study with haydn, met mozart: known as a great pianist, even a virtuoso. Made a living as a virtuoso pianist. 2nd heroic period (1802-1818) gradually went deaf, doesn"t deny this anymore wrote a letter about it. Made a living from composition alone (this is unusual): couldn"t preform publically, last one was in 1814 expanded, even violated classical style and forms beginning with his 3 rd. Eroica (heroic) symphony: echo of recapitulation, people were skeptical but it was planned.
