World war 1 (1914-1918) and world war 2 (1939-1945) Music written in response to this music, inclusivity in the world and in music nationalism led to increased xenophobia and racism came to a head with ww1 and ww2: casualties on a hitherto unimaginable scale. Artists formed collaborative group artists getting more interested in other people, Der blaue reiter (the blue rider: interdisciplinary group based in munich, 1911-14, included schoenberg (composer) and kandinsky (painter) Les six: group of composers based in paris in the 1920s, included poulenc, honegger, and milhaud. Modernism in literature explored unconventional syntax and grammar poets were more interested in the sound of words than their meaning automatic or stream-of-consciousness writing, influenced by psychoanalysis, eg. edouard dujardin, james joyce. Emancipation of the dissonance : no tonic or tonal centre.
