Document Summary

Different types of ways neurons are polarized, and are the most polarized cells in the body. Cell-type specific patterns of neuronal polarization in vivo. Nascent axons usually project away from the cell body. In the neocortex, radial glial cells give rise to neurons, which go through different morphologies at different stages. Parallel between neuronal polarization in vivo and in vitro (cortical pyramidal neurons) The neuron goes through distinct stages during growth. Lamellopodia and filopodia formation during the first stage; followed by immature neurite extensions in stage 2: axon specification occurs during stage 3, with the rest of the neurite extensions becoming dendrites in later stages. Intrinsic factors required because single axon still emerges and the neuron is polarized in vitro. Neurite outgrowth is influenced by a neuron"s surroundings. The extracellular matrix harbors signals that promote or inhibit neurite outgrowth. For example, laminin promotes branch number and outgrowth. Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (cspgs) inhibit laminin effects.
