Used in the 1950 by bigelow, et al. as a means of cerebral protection during cardiac surgery. Further used in neurological, head injury, anoxic injury and surgery. Period of disinterest spanning 3 decades, and revived in early 1990"s by stertz et al. 2 landmark from research in australia and europe, and revival of interest in the therapy: the haca trial (2002) & bernard, et al. ( 2002). Consensus statement by ilcor* ( 2008): mild hypothermia is the only therapy applied in post cardiac arrest setting that has been shown to increase survival rates . Out of hospital cardiac arrests: 10,000 to 40,000 annually in canada. Death from cardio vascular disease (cvd) q 7 minutes. Sudden cardiac death (scd) is responsible for 50-60% of all mortality from cardiovascucular disease (cvd). Scd is the first symptom of coronary disease in approximately 10% of patients. Average age: 65 years. (70-80% are men)
