Japanese bombing had pearl harbour, 7 dec. 1941 sends panic about security of the west coast: security threat, threat of alaska (northwest) American plans to build alaska highway, discussed since 1929 take flight: fears of losing the land. Construction between 1942-43 with 40 000 american and canadian civilians: temporary basis. Relates canol project also constructed but pipeline only endures to 1945 when it is shutdown: connects to mackenzie river oil well to whitehorse, expensive and is built, does(cid:374)"t (cid:449)ork (cid:449)ell i(cid:374) literal se(cid:374)se. Klondike gold rush, 1867-1899 (30 000 migrants) Renewed activity during the 1930 when the canadian government builds the northern staging route, airfields from alaska to edmonton: duri(cid:374)g (cid:1007)(cid:1004)"s, go(cid:448)er(cid:374)(cid:373)e(cid:374)t (cid:449)orks to get i(cid:374)frastru(cid:272)ture (cid:271)uilt. Remains largely isolated at the time of the second world war. Isolated until us decides to create: population of 5000 (majority inuit and first nations)
