Andrew Jackson:
• Is a monumental figure
• Second to Washington
• First president since Washington to command a nation wide
supporters
• Won the war of 1812
• No one comes close to being Jackson after Jackson
• provided real strong leadership
We lack real presidential leader ship
The same period, if we got weak presidents, we still have a very strong
concurs. We have weak president, very strong congress
1850s:
• all the strengths and support will start to fall down
1860s:
• Patters of weak presidents and problems will start to appear and
come together

• William Henry Harrison (W)- 1840 NORTH
• John Tyler (vice) SOUTHERN
• James K. Polk (D)- 1844 SOUTHERN
• Zachary Taylor (W)- 1848

• Franklin Pierce (D)- 1852 NORTH
• James Buchanan (D)- 1856 NORTH
Martin Van Buren:
• chief arctic of Jackson’s New York party
• become an early supporter of Jackson on 1824
• created Jackson clubs for his second term
• served in Jackson’s administration

• they democratic choice for president after Jackson and with
Jackson’s support
• Runs against Harrison
• Due to Jackson’s support he became president after him
• built the democratic party up and created it and now he is in
charge, and everything goes wrong
• leads to the destruction of the second national bank
• 1837: banks charter expires, within weeks, banks around the
countries began to shut down, led to the PANIC of 1837
• People are scared
• State governments had taken out huge loans to fund internal
improvement projects
• Banks began to demand the money even if it was taken the year
before
• there is not much he can do
• was taken down by a bad economy
Later, the D party nominates Van Buran again in 1840 and W nominate
Harrison
Everyone in the D party know that they will get beat, so they let Van Buren
sink as well
Harrison wins election of 1840
William Henry Harrison:
• “if you cant beat them, join them”
• war hero
• "cant beat a somebody with a nobody”
• "kind of like Andrew Jackson” W thinks
• Beating Indians, fighting war of 1812
• Whigs pass out log cabins, claiming Harrison was living in one
• hasn’t been a political figure
• beat the Indians, popular in the west
• from a historic Virginian family
• doesn’t own slaves anymore, did when he was young

• promises that he will clean things
• was taken down by death
• In march his advisors try to keep him in one place and keep him
away from the weather
• He ends up giving his speech outside where it changes from rain to
snow and he gets numina
• He is really old and He later dies
• first president to die in office
• W are facing Tyler as a problem
John Tyler:
• not a W but a Virginian
• He is a mad D
• he announces that he is leaving the D party because he was mad at
it
• W go and scoop him up and make him become a W
• He is not in WC DC when Harrison dies
• He becomes a president
• also a man with no political party
• TX wants to come into the US after it won the war, but many
presidents say no, however, Tyler will try to get TX into the union
and Calhoun tells him all of that
• no one really trusted him
• nothing gets done on his watch
Election of 1844:
• W don’t know what to do
• Big issue was TX
• TX: divides the W and D
• Both are not sure about TX thing
• TX becomes part of the union
• W turn to Clay again, Clay can’t keep his mouth shut
• D don’t know who they will nominate
• Clay says " I would rather be right than president”
