Throughout all of history, we were only concerned about undernutrition. More recently, overnutrition and obesity has become a more prevalent problem. Many of the risk factors for various diseases are related to what you eat. The composition of food and quantity of it is important. Traditional risks (i. e. , undernutrition, air pollution, water, sanitation, hygiene) are decreasing, while modern risks are increasing. These include tobacco use, physical inactivity, overweight, urban air quality, occupational risks and road traffic safety. Depending on the vlcd, there are a range of possibilities with regards to the effects on the body. The risks of periodic fasting are not nearly as severe as those related to starvation. Primary undernutrition is still a #1 cause of death in children. Secondary undernutrition can occur anywhere and are due to malabsorption, cancer, drug abuse and eating disorders. Children stop growing and lose weight, fat, muscle, skin, hair, etc.
