March 29, summary, last 20 minutes of lecture: Can provide early diagnosis with significant reduction in mortality. Easy to perform, can be done at home. Will detect bleeding from the ascending (right) and transverse colon. Can diagnose tumors in the descending colon, sigmoid and rectum at an early stage prior to metastasis. Precancerous adenomas (polyps) can be removed on an outpatient basis. Need a little more preparation to examine the entire colon, allows early detection with reduction in mortality and should be done if symptoms occur and every 5 10 years in most people over age 60. Chemoprevention: eat a healthy diet and do not smoke. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin can lower the risk in certain circumstances and are being tried in some individuals with fap - without successful monitoring and intervention they may require surgical removal of the colon. The survival rate from cancer of the pancreas, liver, esophagus and stomach is very low.
