Document Summary

State of consciousness: level of arousal (awake, asleep, etc. ) Can"t define consciousness but we all can experience it. Can"t measure thoughts, feelings or desires; different for each person. Different ways to measure brain electrical activity but most popular is eeg. The electroencephalograph (eeg) mainly measures the activity of neurons located near the scalp in the gray matter of the cerebral cortex. Eeg: surface electrodes put on the head; non-invasive, you can have 64, 204 electrodes put on the head it varies. Electrodes are big they are picking up the net activity of millions of cortical neurons. Electrodes measures: the voltage; the surface potential very tiny; microvolts. It"s like trying to measure what people are doing when you see them high in the sky from the plane. Eeg: doesn"t tell us about neuro processing but does tell us whole population of neurons if they"re active. Frequency: how fast neurons go up & down how much this voltage is changing.
