Perception is altered by attention: not direct recording like a camera would. So we put in incorrect parts of memories a lot: sensory systems are processed in parallel and serial. 3 steps to go from stimulus to perception: physical stim applied, stim (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) nerve impulse, response. 4 types of info are coded into impulse: modality: type of stim energy and receptor, location: position in space, rf, resolution, timing: how quickly the energy is received/lost. Modality + location are coded into labelled line code. Intensity + timing are coded into neural spiking pattern/code. Labelled line code: organization principle that applies to all systems, brain knows modality of every line (afferent neur, gives rise to phenomena like referred pain, visceral sensory afferents share spinal cord neuron with somatic sensory afferents, ex. Left arm and cardiac nociceptors both send to same 2nd order spinal cord neuron.
