Document Summary
General strategy for sensory processing: adapt to statistics of natural stimuli, peripheral sensory neurons respond to most stims, dense code, all neurons fire, differently, for any stim, ex. forest, city. Neuron will fire for any forest seen: central sensory neurons respond selectively, sparse code, neuron will only fire if specific stim is detected. Neuron will fire only to red cup, etc: grandmother cell theory, jennifer aniston experiment. You acquire a neuron whose only job is to fire when you see your grandmother. Theory is extreme, there has to be redundancy because we lose neurons daily. There must be multiple neurons that allow facial recognition: therefore, can filter out extraneous info and focus on relevant parts only. Neuron can respond to diff views of the object they"re associated with, so we can recognize multiple things as the same object. Ex. soccer ball neurons fire regardless of size, position of ball, or context of ball (if there"s clutter).
