Document Summary

Oct 19, lec 3: neural mechanisms underlying memory formation: plasticity. Hebbian postulate, tetanus induces ltp/ltd, plasticity requires ca++ via nmdar. Ltp not required for forming pfs, but required to maintain them. Vesicle release from presynaptic cell activates post-synaptic receptors. Epsp: excitatory potential, an action potential in presynaptic cell will elicit depolarization in the post-synaptic cell. Neurons a and b: neurons that fire together, wire together. Suggests an association is required to have plasticity. Prepare a in situ experimental slide of rat hippocampus, feed it with glucose and o2 to keep it functional: stimulate the schaffer collateral (sc) fibres with an electrode, record neural responses from ca1 pyramidal cell. Tetanus: stimulus that cause action potential trains to be fired. Is a stimulus that *should* induce ltp according to hebb. Apply 1 hz tetanus on sc fibres: causes ltd. antihebbian. Apply 50 hz tetanus on sc fibres: ltp! Ca++ input via nmda receptors is also required.
