Document Summary

Oct 14, lec 1: hippocampus as a spatial map. Chacron"s section"s paper: hippocampus size in relation to taxi drivers" spatial map experience. Hippocampus for navigation, taxi drivers: total volume doesn"t change, posterior hc is larger in taxi drivers because they have a larger spatial map, anterior hc is smaller, it"s a tradeoff of growth. Hippocampus is one of the only areas of adult brains that shows continual neurogenesis: the other one is olfactory bulbs. Hc is a paired structure: r: spatial maps, l: words, objects, people. Each hippocampus has these pathways: dentate gyrus. Sends mossy fibers to: ca3 pyramidal cells, ca1 pyramidal cells. A spatial representation map: place cells in the hippocampus. Study rodent hippocampus to better understand this spatial map: We can do tetrode measurements: 4 electrodes to do multi-unit recordings, surgically inserted into rat brain, this allows us to record neural activity while rat is awake. Rats with tetrodes are placed in small controlled environment.
