Innate = nativism = noam/gnome chomsky says babies have a circuitry dedicated to language before birth. Lang acquisition follows universal pattern: initial: non speech sounds. Children exhibit universal speech perception/production patterns, independent of language they heard: 6-9 months, learn global sound patterns, prosodic cues (pitch, duration, loudness changes, prosodic cues are not phonemes, and can be transmitted to fetus.
