Description
PHYS 183 – The Milky Way Inside and Out – Tracy Webb Winter 2013 Lecture 10: January 28 , 2013  everything we know about the universe comes from light  colours encode information  light is form of energy (radiative energy) o always moving so it carries energy from one place to another o usually measure rate of energy flow or power: 1 joule/second = 1 watt (ie/ 100 watt light bulb)  bigger the number, brighter the light since more energy is being transferred  light comes in different colours  together they are called a spectrum  when you take white light and separate it all into different pieces you get the visual spectrum  light and matter interact o emission: a light bulb emitting energy o absorption: we feel warm in the sun because we absorb light energy o transmission: a glass window transmits light o reflection/scattering: a mirror reflects light off a very smooth surface, while scattering sends it in random directions  interactions between light & matter determine the appearance of everything around us  what is light? o a wave and a particle  quantum mechanics o a particle of light is called a photon 
