After intake of a meal: how are contents removed: during intake of a new meal, distension of stomach generates gastroileal reflex , gastroileal reflex: (cid:224)activates peristaltic activity in distal ileum, causing relaxation of ileocecal sphincter and emptying contents in the colon (cid:224)distension of distal ileum causes further peristalsis and relaxation of ileocecol sphincter (cid:224)also reinforces the gastrocolic reflexes by sending impulses to distal colon, gastrocolic reflex: (cid:224)increase peristalsis in distal colon, pushing contents into rectum (cid:224)distension of rectum=urge to defecate (cid:224)involves ens and extrinsic (long) reflexes.
