Sharon sparked demonstrations that day as people responded to the heavy police protection that was with sharon: ruined their ability to pray, escalation, attacks on settlers/settlements. Targeted towards the end of the first intifada but much more so in the second. Southern population had doubled under oslo and that"s why there were so many participants: suicide bombing = early in the second intifada. Made its first appearance at the end of the first. Became the image of the second intifada for the first 3-5 years. Especially between 2001-2003 (2002 = the most) Why use suicide bombs: more of an extreme religious flavour to it. On a thursday friday is a peak day for demonstrations in the middle. East (because it"s a day off for most and sometimes when people go for prayer in the middle of the day: demonstrations rippled in west bank, gaza and jerusalem. Demonstrations: some were nonviolent, many turned violent right away.
