Document Summary

Marx wrote on the basis of an existing worker"s movement; is concerned with whether this movement will be political, or apolitical (quasi-religious, moral, symptomatic of early utopian socialists. ) Apolitical socialists have a strong tendency towards religious separatists (quakers, etc. ) > this is what marx is mainly concerned about. Therefore, marx wrote about how to encourage political socialism -> he won this argument. In late 19th century to early 20th, the countries at the forefront of socialist debate were england, france, germany and russia. England had many socialist theorists working, but politically there was no revolutionary zeal. France had a history and, some say, penchant for revolutions, and it made a natural environment for the socialist revolutionary militancy movement. However, after the brutal crushing of the paris commune, french revolutionary socialism was in dire straits, largely because the most prominent revolutionaries were killed or forced into exile.
