Ethnic conlicts by scale and organisaion (horowitz 2001): feuds, lynching, violent protests, ethnic riots, terrorism, civil war, genocide. Violence is generally perpetrated by about 15% of the populaion. Dangers of direct confrontaion: confrontaional fear (not anger, physiological transformaion: as heart rate increases, motor skills deteriorate and there is loss of percepion, audiion and cogniive progressing. Dealing with confrontaional fear: morale/emoional dominance, learning micro-techniques of violence : Audience oriented and controlled fair ight not relevant, this is from centuries ago. Methods of mobilisaion: regular army and police. There are defecions, people fail to actually show up when conscripted. 15-25% of soldiers regularly ire arms in combat, and even then they are mostly not even targeing people, just covering themselves. Small groups were able to control towns for years. Example: child soldiers in africa: 120,000 children are used as combatants and support personnel.
