Document Summary

As society established divisions between the sacred and the profane, it does so through collecive acts, creaing communiies or collecive structures. Acts are done and shared by communal believers. This shared worship of the sacred is central to durkheim"s deiniion of religion. The acts of a group coming together is more important than the object being worshipped (sociologically). They uphold community, renew sense of community belonging, create social order and maintain belief. Pracices provide a means for collecive gathering disinct from daily life, it has a higher energy, an efervescence (??). Collecive acts provide basis for social solidarity, helps create society, and provides means of integraion and social order. The collecive provides meaning (usually we think of religion providing meaning through piety internal relecion instead of the colleciveness). Religion"s object does not have to be worship; it can relate to secular or civic pracices. This solidarity can come in society in non-tradiionally religious collecive pracices.
