Globalization refers to the processes whereby many social relations become relatively delinked from territorial geography, so that human lives are increasingly played out in the world as a single place (scholte) > deterritorialization the shrinking of distance. It isn"t a new phenomenon (british empire encouraged world wide economic ows, the use of the telegraph) but it"s scale and intensity today are unprecedented. Everyone is potentially able to become global agents, but for terrorists it has also been of use. G is empowering but comes with other consequences such as growing (economic) interdependence: > buying foreign goods easily/at home has become widespread. > citizens are increasingly sensitive to what happens elsewhere > 2007/8 economic crisis had worldwide repercussions. > countries, societies must think of what is going elsewhere because of growing interdependence, politics get more complicated.
