Electoral/liberal democracy: elections do not exist or are a mere fa ade (not competitive, the opposition is systematically repressed, the media is controlled and censored, government operates without meaningful. Checks and balances : elections are competitive, the opposition can challenge the government in arenas other than elections, the media is free, there are meaningful formal checks and balances (independent judiciary, legislature, etc) on the executive. Think of china, iran, russia, venezuela, etc. To develop must be consistently democratic or non-democratic (e. g. haiti) Limit, to varying degrees, other public rights. Can be non-ideological: driven by whims of those in power. Personal and monarchial rule: one single person is t to rule (charisma, tradition) Military rule: coup d" tat, often claims to be temporary, rational authoritarian rule as opposed to emotional democracy. One-party rule: single party monopoly, cooptation, bene ts to party members. Theocracy: rule by god, faith is foundation of political regime.
