Vanberg and martin examine some of the important dynamics of coalition governments. How do you manage the compromise between advantage and cooperation. You are forming a government with a shared interest. You want to monitor the behaviour of the other partner. The coalition is used in order to overtime produce an advantage. In the future you will be with this party in the battle for power. There is an exit option to bring down the government. We are looking how to understand the balance a political equilibrium that defines the stability of a particular coalition government. These are the result of the contract that they both agree to. They specify what i call an initial condition, the political result of this initial condition, and then the problem that this political result produces, then finally the question that they seek to answer in their research.
