Poli221 the political executive part 2 lecture notes. Notion that if you cannot agree with government policy you must resign. If you publicly disagree you will be fired. Executive is drawn from legislature (fusion of power), a central characteristic of parliamentary government. Cabinet minister must be members of parliament but there are some qualifications: must run as soon as possible in a by-election or a general election and get elected. If they fail, they are dropped from cabinet: mckenzie king defeated 4/5 times and had to find new ridings to run in, can run as senator. There are other interests that need to be represented. Pressure on cabinet to become larger in size. Social-conservatives, or the progressive conservatives, red tories: progressive wing or business oriented, both sub-categories want to be in cabinet, different forms of representation here as well, non-territorial groups of interest push cabinet up in size.
