Document Summary
Federal election 1997: liberal seats from ontario:101/liberal seats in house: Equalization program(1950s)- federal government money in provincial / constitutional commitment to transfer money to provinces to address regional disparities. This is our implicit point of comparison- the two way very entrenched 2 party system. Provincial parties- compete for provincial elections that do not compete federally- specific ones born and live or die in the boundaries of a particular province- unique to that province and not necessarily reflected within federal politics- quebec solidaire. Historically in quebec: union national- contested office primarily in the 50"s and earlier. Saskatchewan party/social credit party-provincial party in alberta and bc and to some degree in quebec. Not just an example here and there, but particular political parties that compete within a particular space, to address particular issues within those provincial boundaries and that flavors the parties in competition.
