Important historical milestones: colonisaion, briish conquest, waves of english immigraion, Formed the pari canadien, led by papineau, changed name to pari-patriote as they became more radical. 3 principles: equality of all before the law, sovereignty of the people and separaion of the church and state (not ani-catholic though). 1837-8 rebellion: armed rebellion of patriots, was repressed by the briish government. Why it failed: ideological incoherency (liberalism vs. conservaism), ambivalence about use of violence (papineau uncomfortable with leading armed rebellion), use of violence gave jusiicaion for repression, catholic clergy opposed movement. Lots of clergy came from france, v conservaive and authoritarian authority came from god, didn"t like idea of sovereignty of people. Stagnaion of church not enough people joining to sustain it. Strain on educaion and health systems, needed to hire non-clergy. Young educated people began to oppose power of the church. Asbestos strike, rights of workers gained salience as they became more important to society.
