Lots of clergy came from france, v conservaive and authoritarian authority came from god, didn"t like idea of sovereignty of people. Stagnaion of church not enough people joining to sustain it. Strain on educaion and health systems, needed to hire non-clergy. Young educated people began to oppose power of the church. Asbestos strike, rights of workers gained salience as they became more important to society.
