Mouvement souvrainete associaion (msa) founded in 1967 by levesque to promote a sovereignty associaion with canada. Msa merged with ralliement naional (another independence movement) to form the pq in 1968. It irst paricipated in provincial elecions in: this elecion and the following 1973 had low pq results. Tapisme -- they would undertake steps on the path to independence (1. good government 2. referendum on independence 3. independence). Next elecions in 1976 had much beter results. 1980 referendum: quesion was whether or not the qc gov should have the mandate to negoiate a sovereignty associaion. High voter turnout, about 40% voted yes so it was a failure. Consituional recogniion of language rights, equality of languages. Wanted acceptance of diferent cultures instead of assimilaion. Equality of individuals, cultures and languages: consituional law of 1988: Charter of rights and freedoms- included linguisic rights: refused to quebec: Mulroney promised amendments during campaign, won and worked with prov gov (bourassa) towards meech lake accord.
