Legiimacy of state-based naions and support from various groups. Ethnic ideniies constructed when some people self consciously disinguish themselves form others: shared cultural atributes, values, norms, goals, beliefs, languages. Ethno-poliical: ethnic ideniies that are poliicized, emphasise interacive causal signiicaion of ethnic and poliical components of idenity formaion: works with organizaions, insituional rules, and internaional inluences. Many faced european colonialism, a crucial role in the construcion of ethnic ideniies, and even more racial role inn poliician and organizaion in ethno-poliical groups. Many naions outnumbered by indigenous indians or african slaves: increasing strength of indian ideniies as disadvantage minoriies. Post-independence poliics intensiied group poliicians and reined by internaional support for disadvantaged minoriies. Colonial rulers reliance on local agents to cope with conlict: creaion of admin units in the cost of governance. Combined with post colonial regimes od=f instrumental ethno poliical demands to foster communal contenion. Ethnic ideniies are constructed and ater oten poliicized to become ethno poliical.
