Deiniion (dos santos): a situaion in which the economy of certain countries is condiioned by the development and expansion of another economy to which the former is subjected , loses ability to control. Economy changes, consequences for the state: venezuela becomes a leading exporter of oil. Global north and global south: within countries. Problem is structural: insituions, nature of economy, are hard to change or reverse, domesic elites share common interests with internaional capital. Advantage interests internalisaion of dependency (makes things like decolonizaion diicult to achieve) Personal gain for dominant classes is not conducive to naional development: cardoso and faleto: associated dependent development . North gaining at the expense of the south emphasizes dynamic processes and not underdevelopment. Not an either or but a spectrum . Market creaion dependent on dynamics of workers/consumers virtual circle: inequality, lack of consensus and democraic instability.
