Ariculaing long and short term goals to create the kind of society people want: making sure that short term doesn"t undermine the long term, eg. Issues with doctors without borders: create sustainability. Avoiding dependency by achieving development in the most basic sense: access to services, including healthcare, educaion and old age reirement, creaing an economy that can generate resources (taxes) and employment, cannot have development without the economy. Deining development: improving people"s quality of life in ways they appreciate. Brundtland commission 1987: development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability to future generaions to meet their own needs: standard interpretaion, current economic acivity can coninue, environment primary concern. Not a concern for developing western world. Problem: insuicient for majority of world"s populaion: not lifestyles but basics: housing, water, sanitaion, electricity (access to internet and cellphones! They need to create jobs, especially for youth: need capacity to generate resources, to create a sustainable way of life.
