The southern us in the 1960"s was racially segregated by the government. King was serving a sentence in jail. The letter was in response to a white clergymen"s letter speaking against. The clergyman warned that mlk"s campaign would lead to violence and the legal system would take care of the racial segregation (hard since the legal system itself was racist. Explanation of campaign of nonviolent social / political activism: four basic steps in mlk"s campaign: Collection of facts to determine where there was injustice. Negotiation with the gov to change the racist laws present. Self purification by the people of the movement. Mlk thought you only had to obey just laws and disobey unjust laws. If its a law that is imposed on a minatory by a majority and not applied to everyone in society. If the law was set up upon a minority without giving them a say in the process of making the law: self-purification.
