POLI 244 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Religious Persecution, Sharia

48 views2 pages

Document Summary

Religious persecution does not have the be the most prominent part of the war to be a human rights violation taking lives. If the west is aware that people are dying because there is a lack of religious freedom, we have the responsibility to make efforts, such as implementation of the charter, to combat these conditions. Hurd expresses concern that the international community"s involvement in religious freedom will limit action towards other worthy causes. I cannot emphasize enough that supporting religious freedom does not need to be a zero-sum game- one can support religious freedom without hindering the success of another cause. Religion is inescapable in this war, and hurd"s argument that the west is unjustly blaming religion factors is unfounded. Hurd believes that bringing religious freedom to oppressed communities will foster societal divides. This bridges the divide in oppressive societies that perpetuate the us versus them mentality, and works to put everyone in equal standing.
