Theory as a conceptual map that highlights things to us that wouldn"t otherwise be intelligible. Realism / liberalism / constructivism anarchy ? absence of authority. Realism : relationships between states are inherently competitive. Liberals : absence of hierarchy but does not have to be competitive for power or any military confrontation. > provide some sort of interpretation/observation/orientation at understanding international relations. Different types of variables : cause / effect. Independent variables (x variable) : have the causal force and motivate the change. Intervening variables : they shape the independent variable and provide some sort of influence to the independent variable ex : the avengers. Alien invasion : dependent invasion (how did they get there?) Intervening variables : the avengers ex : the dark knight rises independent variables : strength, batman"s injuries.
