Kennedy three choices: invade cuba, naval blockade around cuba chose this, people saw this as soft, bomb nuclear areas in cuba missiles, kennedy would not invade. Secret negotiations were being held kruschev agreed to remove. Mao criticized krushev for backing down in cuban missile crisis. Soviets and china split in ideology for 30 years. China was more peasantry, russia was working class: maoism vs marxist-leninism. Khrushev wanted peace between communists and capitalists. 1954: viet nimh drew french colonialists outside of vietnam. Democratic vietnam was north, south had ngo diem. Free elections were proposed didn"t follow through. Viet cong won support from peasants: 1961: controlled half of south vietnam. 1965: operation rolling thunder bombs dropped all around vietnam. Vietnam needed support from ussr provided weapons.
