Shadowy and passive presence (burqa) reinforces gendered images. Conduct of war largely male activity, exhorts women to fight too re-masculinization of society during times of war. George patton: war gives purpose to life, energizes societies and fosters communal spirit. Culture molds males into warriors manhood qualities that make good warriors. Notion that males fight wars to protect vulnerable people women and children cannot be expected to protect themselves: myth of needed protection.
