Ww1 was a war nobody wanted: the most global and bloodiest war up until this time. Because of alliance patterns, all of europe got pulled in: began in balkans, a smaller place but dragged all of europe in. By far the bloodiest war then world had ever seen up till then. Austria-hungary accused serbia of aiding assassins (black hand), serbia didn"t meet a-h ultimatum, black hand received support from serbia: serbia only responded to some parts of the ultimatum. Russia and france, bound by 1892 treaty, were obligated to mobilize if any. Triple alliance members mobilized: austria-hungary, germany, italy triple alliance, russia-france treaty bound to do the same. Soon, everyone but italy had chosen sides and gone to war. Multipolarity: a bunch of countries that were somewhat equally matched in power. Italy declined to join war because the alliance attacked first (not defensive: treaty said that you have to go to war for defensive purposes, not defensive.
