Russia and france, bound by 1892 treaty, were obligated to mobilize if any. Triple alliance members mobilized: austria-hungary, germany, italy triple alliance, russia-france treaty bound to do the same. Soon, everyone but italy had chosen sides and gone to war. Multipolarity: a bunch of countries that were somewhat equally matched in power. Italy declined to join war because the alliance attacked first (not defensive: treaty said that you have to go to war for defensive purposes, not defensive.
