Case Study: CHILE, 1973
From Socialist Democracy to Military Dictatorship
Chilean Political History
- Democracy for 150 years, virtually uninterrupted (1820s to 1970s)
- Going authoritarian after a long period of democracy, what happened?
- Unusually large middle class provided stability
- anchored the country in a pattern of stability whereas the pure middle configuration of
wealthy few and many poor is typically a formula for more instability
Signs of Trouble
- Increased tension leading into 1960s, polarization between Left and Right in 1960s
- Cuban revolution of 1959 which then arose these other crises; a communist regime in
power and this overthrew a regime that had been friendly with the US beforehand (Battista)
- Once Cuban rev occurred, US very paranoid of communist regimes pupping up
especially in LA and the Caribbean
- US on guard for any left wing govt. (govt. which got power through revolutionary
means), US began to meddle in Chilean
- “tart of U“ eddlig to assist the rise of Christia Deorats to preet aother Cua
- done covertly through the CIA
- involvement of the Cia in Chile is extremely documented (no doubt about what they
were doing)
- CIA starts backing Eduardo Frei with $$ (to back the Christian Democrats)
Land Expropriation
- When Frei comes to power in 1968, he redistributes rural land from rich to poor
- This causes huge upheaval (domestically)
- US backed the wrong person, they did not want to back a leftist program
- This led to new elections in 1970 (just 2 years later, Salvador Allende, doctor-turned politician,
comes to power with a slim majority
- did not have a huge mandate form the people of Chile
Salvador Allende after his election to power
- implemented some policies which made him unpopular in certain sectors of society
Allede’s Risky Path
- Allede’s Uited Party eleted i 97
- Only had a slim margin in govt. after his election
- Nevertheless, embarked on an ambitious campaign to nationalize the copper mines, other
industries
