Last time we talked about nicaragua and the insurgencies. Elected to power in 18984 and again in 2006. He won a third term in 2016, with 70% of vote. Definition of the instrumental state: study case- salvador. The state serves as an instrument of class domination. He acts to maintain the conditions necessary for capital accumulation. It is more difficult for a revolution to appear in a instrumentalist state rather than a personalist one. In 1920"s, 90% of el salvador land was land by only 14 families, los cartorce who used the land to grow coffee. It wanted to shake up the state structure: it led to la matanza meaning the killing. Rebels, mainly pipil indians by farabundo marti seized territory in eastern. State responded with violence killing 10-40,000 peasants in. The vast majority of them were from an indigenous background. Inequalities was already in place and that what led to insurrections. The state became the enemy of indigenous people.
