Secession (john r wood): an instance of political disintegration wherein political actors in one or more subsystems withdraw their loyalties, expectations and political captivities from a jurisdictional centre and focus them on a centre of their own. This involve a claim to self-determination and the territorial separation of a region from a state. Secessionist conflict shares many of the same features displayed by ethnic conflict. Only 9 sub-sahara african ssa countries have experience a major secessionist conflict. Until the successful succession of southern sudan in 2011, eritrea was the only other case of successful secession in post-colonial africa. The literature points to a number of nationalist, culturalist, and historical institutionalist explanations that can account for the propensity for secession. But very little attention has been paid to why weak and failed states do not fragment in.
