April 2014 presidential elections: boutefilka"s poor health, constitutional amendment to permit 4th term in office. Islamist justice and development party wins plurality with 107/395 seats: pjd forms government, new elections to be held 7th oct. 2016. King still genuinely popular (more so than any individual civilian figure): but palace acts as shadow government , supporting government initiatives it approves of and slowing those it doesn"t, royal cronyism and patronage, leads to corruption at times. Political patronage not always corruption (legal patronage in the us) Pjd"s challenge of governing: austerity measures, sluggish growth (social and economic challenges it faces), drought: youth unemployment (which has generally been a problem across the middle east) Receiving more education than their parents, still unable to find jobs: middle east has undergone demographic shift (birth rates decline, high death rate) though. Youth bulge occurred when high birth rates and death rate briefly declined.
