A varied of terms have been used to discuss aspects of islamist political movements. Islam is a religion (islamic/ muslim and islamist are not the same) Islamist movements are movements whos ideologies are based on a specific reading of the quran or islam. Religion (in may islamic cases there is a hearkening to the time of the prophet) The issue with this term is that in islam jihad simply means. Righteous struggle not necessarily an armed conflict for islam. A jihad could be quitting cigarettes for instance. Because in the mena region the term is viewed positively, governments in these regions will always refrain from calling these groups jihadis as it can be seen t some degree as a compliment. Movements that look back to the time of the prophet as a blueprint for the creation of the perfect islamic society.
