Technology affects war and peace in several ways. Airplanes, tanks, other offensive weapons influence warfare by making it more mobile, faster. Cost-benefit calculation of military planners influenced by technology. Technology is prevalent in historical literature as constantly changing warfare. Ancient greeks able to defeat persians by using body armour. Stirrups, used by genghis khan, first time used to be able to ride for extended periods of time without falling off. Every empire in the past has had technological advances that allowed them to conquer. Unifying theme of this period is that war machines derived energy from muscles of animals and man. Dominant empires do not like opponents getting technology (obviously ) Siege warfare possible because of the development of guns/artillery. Great european powers used naval powers to conquer. In this period, dominant role of machines derived their energy from non-organic sources such as wing, water and gunpowder. Gunpowder revolutionized warfare, esp. in siege operations.
