National security: = protection of national territory, people, and assets from external threats -> however ambiguous concept. Security can become focused on protection of the elite; can be used as a political (cid:513)trump card(cid:514: national security can contribute to the security dilemma. National = nation state; does not take into account the interests of other states. Global security = normative, broader concept -> hope that world will move away from national to global security: many dimensions of security beyond national security. Military doctrines, strategy, grand strategy: states are bound by strategic choices, strategy = application of military means to obtain objectives of war. Tactics = coordination and direction of resources during war: grand strategy = strategy that looks beyond war towards political goals. Great powers pay a lot of attention to grand strategy -> plan for prosperity: technological innovations can dramatically change strategy, military doctrines.
