Typology of paries: non-ethnic paries: based on ideology, class, etc. Generally have cross-ethnic support: ethnic paries: focus on ethnic issues, stable paterns of ethnic support, muli-ethnic paries: stable electoral support from more than one ethnic group, focus on ethnic issues. Ethnic party systems: ethnic paries, ethnic paries and coaliions of ethnic paries, ethnic paries and muliethnic paries, muliethnic single paries. Ethnic party dynamic: ethnic voing census-like dynamics (high voter turnout rates, sancions for deviants, growing ethnic tensions. Change of ethnic party systems: intra-ethnic compeiion. Condiions: existence of sub-ethnic divisions, group demographic strength, posiion vis- -vis other ethnic groups, and leadership"s posiion: from tripolar to bipolar system: path 1: division of a third party among two strongest ethnic paries. Path 2: absorpion of a third party into one of the two. Characterisics: goal is formaion of the government, separate ickets, pool seats, independent, incompaible policy posiions: commitment.
