People with anterograde amnesia are unable to remember information about the location of rooms, corridors, buildings, roads and other important items in their environment. But they also have deficits specific to navigating. Subjects played a virtual reality game in which they had to navigate around a town until they became familiar with it. Subjects then played the game while their heads were in a pet scanner. During navigation, the right hippocampal formation became active and the amount of activity there was associated with subjects accuracy in navigation. I(cid:374) 1971, o"keefe a(cid:374)d dost(cid:396)o(cid:448)sk(cid:455) showed that pyramidal cells in the hippocampus showed a high rate of firing when rats were located in a particular place. Recorded the activity in the hippocampus of a rat walking around in a square room. Different neurons had different receptive fields; they fired when the rat was in a specific place.
