Chapter 16: autistic, attention-deficit, stress, and substance abuse disorders. It is not entirely clear what triggers this. There are episodes where someone is overwhelmed with terror. A stressful life condition can promote the attack, or it could just arise somewhat randomly. It is healthy for children to have anxiety for short moments and then go back to a neutral state. Anxiety has been increasing very much in the last 20 years. Social anxiety disorder: more social situations you can enjoy social situations for decades of your life and then all of a sudden develop anxiety where you, say, cannot raise your hand in class anymore. Agoraphobia is a fear of, say, going outside. You have anxiety and so you stay home and you develop of sense of being safe at home. General life stress as well as alcohol and tobacco are known to exacerbate feelings of anxiety. Older people who have dementia often have problems with anxiety.
