PSYC 211 Lecture 3: 211 - Lecture 3
Document Summary
The ve proteins important for the action potential. Sodium-potassium transporter (requires atp, concentrates sodium and potassium outside and inside the cell, respectively). Leak potassium channels (always open; sets up the resting membrane potential). Sodium (to initiate and propagate the action potential). Potassium (to restore the resting membrane potential). If there is an equal concentration of positively and negatively charged ions on either side of the membrane, then: outside of cell = 0mv ; inside of cell = 0mv. It all starts with the sodium-potassium pump: k+ is pumped in while na+ is pumped out. There is no electrical charge differences yet, as there is still similar amounts of positive ions inside and out. There is a potential energy in this cell based on the force of diffusion. K+ ions feel crowded in the cell and want to leave. Movement of molecules from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration.
