PSYC 212 Lecture 1: Week 1
Document Summary
Sensation and perception are at the base of what it means to feel alive. Survival: we live in a crazy wild world, where both we and the environment constantly changes. This body of knowledge was created for a reason. The knowledge consists of both descriptions and mechanisms. 3 midterms worth 20% each (feb 9, march 8, march 29, and final that is cumulative worth 40%) 5% extra credit clicker questions (2/3 of questions must be answered, but don"t have to be correct) Sensation is the original imprint of the physical world. But we wouldn"t have described the quality of the stimulus. Content: what the stimulus contained (color, motion, texture, taste, smell) Waves: most stimulus contents are best described as waves, ex: light and sound are waves. Even patterns of stimuli can be described by waves. We can describe any texture (visual or somatosensory) as 2-d spatial frequency patterns.
