Fmri is a very course method- what areas of the brain experience greater blood flow during tasks- but it would not help you find the really fundamental constitutive elements. The microscope is the tool you need to see the cells that make up your brain. - the brain- think about seeing neurons, want to discover those as a constitutive element of the brain. You have a brand new research grade microscope that you can visualize down to a few microns. Nothing clear- you would see nothing at all. Tissue- when you slice it, you just see many blots of blood, but nothing clear.
